Art Gallery of Hell
For a place of ultimate punishment and torment, Hell can be quite engaging. I was fascinated by how the Christian concept of Hell evolved over the centuries, from medieval Hellmouths through Dante's nine levels, Milton's angelic rebellion, and the sinners in the hands of Jonathan Edwards' angry God. There is an extraordinary history of artistic depictions of Hell, with artists like Bosch, Rodin, and Doré using their imaginations to show the unimaginable.
A few of those images are shown below. For more, check out my Instagram and Facebook feeds (@hell_scapes) showcasing the art of Hell in both Christian and non-Christian traditions. And join me in a Hell Art Scavenger Hunt: If you're visiting a museum and happen to find more Hell images, send me photos of the work and its explanatory plaque.
